SCOTUS Strikes Down Trump’s Global Tariffs The Supreme Court of the United States ruled 6–3 that President Donald Trump cannot use the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) to impose sweeping global tariffs.
Chief Justice John Roberts wrote that IEEPA contains no authorization for tariffs, rejecting the administration’s emergency powers argument.
1. The Supreme Court’s Decision
On February 20, 2026, the US Supreme Court made a historic decision to stop President Donald Trump’s heavy taxes (tariffs) on goods coming from other countries. The judges voted 6 to 3 against the tariffs. They said that under the US Constitution, only Congress has the power to set these taxes during peacetime, not the President.
2. Trump’s Angry Reaction
Trump was very upset about this ruling. Shortly after, he held a press conference at the White House. He called the decision a “disgrace to the nation.” He even insulted the judges he had chosen himself, calling them “fools” and “lap dogs.” He also claimed, without showing any proof, that foreign countries influenced the judges.
3. The New 10% Tax Plan
Even though he lost in court, Trump did not give up on his trade plans. During the same press conference, he signed a new order using a different law. This new order puts a 10% tax on all goods from every country. This temporary 10% global tariff will start on February 24, 2026, and will last for 150 days.
